Tuesday was Veteran's Day. I knew very little about my grandfathers, both veterans, since they died when I was still very young. So I talked to my grandmothers and they filled me in on some things. I also talked with my friend Fletcher, also a veteran:

  • My Grandfather, J.C. Ambrose, was in the Army infantry in World War II and served with General Patton.
  • My Grandfather, A.W. Eklund, was a medic in the Army in World War II, stationed in Germany. He was in on the liberation of one of the concentration camps on the second day. I'm not sure which one but I want to say Buchenwald. We have photo albums of some of the things he took pictures of - the kinds of pictures you never forget. One could only imagine what it was like in person and how much harder it must have been to forget when you were actually there.
  • My friend, Fletcher Thorne-Thomsen, was in the Army in World War II and was one of the first four people to liberate the Dachau concentration camp. He said the things he's seen are unspeakable.

It's amazing to me that the people I know and the people who make up my past are also the same people who fought for this country and paved the way for the life I have today. I guess that's the beauty of this country - we've worked hard for our freedom and continue to work hard to ensure that future generations share the same liberties and the same or better opportunities than we had.

My thoughts on the third Matrix movie (Revolutions)? I think the Matrix franchise ran out of plot after the first movie.

The Onion In History's Official Correction of Dewey Defeats Truman, bottom of page in a small box, 6 days later:

CORRECTION:
On its Nov. 3 front page, The Onion erroneously reported that the Other Guy had defeated What's-His-Face in the 1948 presidential election. In fact, What's-His-Face defeated the Other Guy. The Onion regrets the error.

More on the Panthers/Bucs game from last Sunday, this one from David Fleming at ESPN: "Will someone buy the Bucs a Panthers' roster and show them that Ricky Proehl is on the team and eligible to catch passes? Thanks." (Proehl averaged 44.3 yards per catch on 3 catches).

Check out number 8 on ESPN's list of the Greatest Individual Streaks: Cael Sanderson's 159 straight college wrestling wins. That's pretty cool - I got to see Cael wrestle several times and he was so smooth. It's like he was operating in Matrix time. I knew what move he was going to do, his opponent knew what move he was going to do, the referee knew what move he was going to do, Cael knew what move he was going to do, the crowd knew what move he was going to do. Despite all this his opponent could never stop him from doing it. And it really looked like it would happen in slow motion.
