tiger woods almost killed me
05-11-04
Well, actually, Tiger Woods almost hit me with a golf ball. My pal James called me on Sunday morning and told me to get dressed because he had two tickets to the final round of the Wachovia Championship, which is here in Charlotte. We headed out and staked our real estate in our foldy chairs on the edge of the fringe on the 3rd hole, on the left side right past the tree where the dogleg turns left. Most of the players we'd been watching had been hitting it right in front of us off the tee and we were able to watch their second shot to the green and see them on the green as well from where we were. So it was Tiger's turn and we were ready, excited to finally see Tiger up close and personal. We can't actually see the tee shot because of the tree, but all of a sudden there's a lot of commotion around the tree and it seems Tiger hit his ball right into it. Apparently, though I didn't see it, one of the little kids standing there touched the ball as it was rolling, so they gave Tiger a drop. He dropped it and the officials made me and James and every one else move out of the way because he was going to try and zing it in between the tree he hit and another tree (where the crowd was standing). We all backed up and Tiger lined up to hit his shot, almost aiming directly at me and James. Then he clobbered the ball and it flew about 4 feet in front of our faces, going so fast we could actually hear it. It went through a branch and knocked off some leaves and sailed right onto the green. It was pretty incredible. And I don't even like golf.
Erin has finally finished school. It's all done. Thesis defended. Last final taken. One rummy coke and a huge sigh of relief was the theme last night when she got home from her final. Grad school starts wearing you down after about the first year and it just gets worse from there. By the end you're so ready to be done and it's so hard to motivate yourself that you wonder if you can make it. But she did and I'm proud of her. Now we've got some work to do for the wedding.
I don't think I've written about it, but dad and I were in St. Louis back in March for the NCAA Wrestling Championships, the same event we went to back in 2000. St. Louis is a really great place to visit and we got to see some incredible wrestling. As always, the quarterfinals and semifinals trumped the finals in terms of upsets and pure action. Contrary to 4 years ago, it was definitely an Oklahoma State crowd this time and not as much an Iowa one. There was so much orange and black we thought we were going to be getting candy.
